Statewide HVAC changeouts decreased by over 710 units in the month of July from the predominant 3,782 total change-outs reported in June 2014. Even changeouts issued in the month of May 2014 were over 160 units higher with 3,235 total units as compared to July with only 3,072.
While solar installations have been progressively increasing month over month – by 767 installations in July and 686 in June – HVAC seems to have stalled. In a season where the majority of our state bakes in the summer sun, most would expect HVAC change-outs to increase, not decrease.
The updates in CA’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards could explain this “cooling off” of HVAC and mechanical permit activity, but of course, there’s the chance that this correlation is just a coincidence.
It's also important to note that reported data in July might have been affected by the municipality building officials and staff taking vacations. Please contact us at CHF-CIRB@mychf.org for questions regarding HVAC or solar permits and/or the monthly CIRB Energy Permit Summary report.
